Sundays Are For–Dare I Say It–Relaxing

I have been sad lately that I haven’t been painting, so today I decided to stop being sad and just paint. Even if it’s not the greatest painting in the world or anything. So I took a barely finished sketch, printed it onto scrap paper and… painted.

Sketch onto scrap paper–yes, that is Iphigenia and her naga friend from the Lair by the Sea.

Dropping the first washes.

Adding the green while puzzling at how to make it work when Iphigenia is all platinum purples and pinks.

Deciding I need a background. An unplanned one. And just sort of winging it. And not being happy with it…

…moment of revelation: I didn’t have enough darks!

…and now I am increasingly happy with the background.

Pondering the silhouettes in the background, and whether I want them darker or more distinct.

Decided I needed to stop and work on the naga, who is turning out more effeminate than I planned, but that’s okay. The face is so tiny I am using 3/0 brushes and taking off my glasses just to get the little pupils and gloss on her/his lips.

…and I stopped just short of it being done because it doesn’t look done but I’m not sure how I want to handle finishing it. But I put in a good hour and a half into this painting so far, and it was a lot of fun. It is seriously weird to do a picture for no other reason than because I felt like it. I can’t remember the last time I did that…! I will probably finish this one off next week and then (dutifully) start working on the cover for Mindline.

It needs a title. In my head it hovers between “Protective” and “My Naga.” Lol. I should put some more serious thought into it. :)
