Daughter at 5 Years
“Mommy!” Child says. “Can I have some tape? I want to make a nest for Jesus.”
“Uh… sure?” I say. “You can go get it, it’s on the desk in the kitchen.”
“Okay!” she says, and vanishes. I hear rustling and the squeak of tape being torn off on the dispenser’s teeth, and I puzzle a bit at Jesus needing a nest but (truth be known) not too much because I am in the middle of something.
Not long after, Child appears with a round bundle of bubble wrap. “I made Jesus in an egg!” she declares.
“A…. what?” I ask.
“An egg!” she says. “He has a nest. When he’s a baby?”
“Oh!” I say. “You mean… a manger. The little thing he’s lying in, with the hay, that’s a manger.”
“Right,” she says. “For him to sleep in.”
“What’s in there?” I say, peering into the bubble wrap.
“An orange!” she says. “I used an orange for Jesus. Because I couldn’t stick two oranges together and have them stay together.”
My head starts throbbing. “So Jesus would have been like… an oranges snowman.”
“NOOoo, Mommy,” she says, rolling her eyes. “Jesus isn’t a snowman!” She brandishes the “nest”. “I used oranges. Because… we like oranges. Do you love Jesus?”
Trying to keep up with her, I say, “Yes?”
“And do you love oranges?” she continues.
“Uh…sure…?” I say.
“So I used an orange for Jesus. Because you like oranges!” she concludes. “You see?”
“Of course,” I say. “That’s a very nice nest you made for Jesus.”
“Thank you!” she says, and skips off.
Sometimes your face hurts from the effort needed to keep it from contorting into all the many, many shapes it is trying desperately to form. I like oranges and I like Jesus. It makes perfect sense!
