In Which the Jaguar Fusses Over Layout

I am staring at proofs for Black Blossom and I just can’t figure out if I’m on my way to needing reading glasses or if 10-point is too small a font. So far I’ve printed out… five copies of the same two pages and squinted at them over and over. Should I choose 10-point? 11? Medium or book weight? Do I even want this particular font? Arrrrgh.

Yes, this is the kind of stuff I fuss about. My books not only need to be beautiful, but appropriate, in the sense that the font and layout need to suit the text. Even if it’s a subtle thing. Dave and I are playing with using the proportions typical of medieval manuscripts for Black Blossom, for instance, which would make the outside margin wider than the inside.

Book design is important. If I am going to bother with hard copies, they are going to be beautiful.

Anyway. Am I the only one who squints at 10-point fonts? Maybe I really do need reading glasses. o_o

(And yes, my laser printer is finally grinding toward its end. Not too bad, since I’ve had it since 1997… hold on a little bit longer, fellow.)
